David ETTERSHANK (Western Metropolitan Region):

My constituency question is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety.

On the 24th of May, I attended the Leakes Needs Lights rally and heard from many frustrated constituents that their request for traffic lights at the incredibly dangerous and congested Leakes Road interchange has been ignored.

When I raised this issue last year, the previous Minister ruled out installing temporary signals for technical reasons — even though this basic measure would improve safety immediately at very low cost.

Indeed, Ms Grigorovich’s petition stated, “the safety risk is critical now, and something must be done in the interim to improve the safety of this dangerous interchange.”

My constituents ask: Will the Minister explain why the community are being asked to wait for the completed $1 billion Western Highway upgrade before they can travel safely around their suburbs?

Hon. Ros Spence MP
(Minister for Roads and Road Safety)

Questions regarding the $1 billion upgrade of the Western Freeway from Melton to Caroline Springs, including relevant intersections, are best directed to the Minister for Transport Infrastructure.
