David ETTERSHANK (Western Metropolitan):

My question is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. Last Thursday a young man by the name of Angus Collins was tragically killed at the corner of Footscray Road and Dock Link Road. This young cyclist’s death highlights the failure of the department to provide a safe route for cyclists in this area. This has been a problem for years. It has been further aggravated recently, and all complaints and requests from the local community have been ignored. I seek a response from the minister as to what the department will do about this.

I thank the Member for Western Metropolitan Region for his question. I was saddened to hear of the recent tragedy to which the Member refers. Safety for all road users is the highest priority of the Andrews Labor Government on Victoria’s roads.

As the Member may be aware, a new 2.5-kilometre elevated veloway is being delivered as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project that will connect Footscray and Docklands and remove six intersections, including Dock Link Road, providing a safer and faster off-road route for cyclists into the city.

The West Gate Tunnel Project falls within the portfolio responsibilities of the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure. For more information about the Project, the Member may wish to direct his question to the Hon Jacinta Allan MP.
