Victorian Legislative Council, Melbourne

David ETTERSHANK (Western Metropolitan) (09:42):
Thank you, President. I give notice that on the next day of meeting, I will move:

That this House notes that —

1) – the results of the 2022-2023 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare last week, have revealed that 80% of Australians believe that possession of cannabis should not be a criminal offence;

2) – this result reinforces the 2019 survey which showed that 78% of Australians supported decriminalisation of cannabis;

3) – these survey findings equate to equate to four and a half million adult Victorians who support the decriminalisation of cannabis;

and, given this groundswell of support for change, calls on the Allan government to reform the law to align with the public support for the decriminalisation of cannabis.
